It’s back to school season, John, and as I watched my oldest settle into their college dorm, I couldn’t help but think about my own experience.
I was lucky to go to college — which was made possible by working and going to class and student loans. I had grown up spending the summers on my grandparents’ dairy farm, and I was proud to bring my rural upbringing with me to college and beyond.
Like so many students, I couldn’t afford tuition if I hadn’t worked my way through. From running the counter of a dry cleaner to working various part-time jobs to pay each semester, I did what I had to do to get an education. I even worked the overnight shift in the ER while pursuing my masters degree at Johns Hopkins.
Can you believe that I just paid off my student loans at 50 years old? I know how it feels to graduate buried in debt that feels insurmountable.
Wisconsin families like mine do everything they can to see to it that their children have it better than they did — whether it’s saving for years, taking out loans, or going into debt.
That’s why I’m running for Governor to build a Wisconsin where everyone has a fair shot. Whatever paths our kids choose, I want to make sure they have the opportunities to pursue them.
Will you pitch in to my campaign for Governor so I can invest in our children and ensure they have the means to pursue the future they want and deserve?
