Too often our politics feels like a circus. The drama takes center stage, while the real consequences for our families, our freedoms, and our health get lost in the noise.

Trump’s appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead public health is a perfect example. Much attention has been paid to the sheer strangeness of this man – and rightfully so. 

But the problem with RFK Jr. isn’t just that he’s a quack who makes a mockery of the idea of science and medicine in public policy. The problem is that he’s a quack with power over your health, and he’s using his power to hurt you.

That’s why putting him in charge of public health was a darkly clever act of theater on Trump’s part, trolling the doctors and medical experts whom the president has taught his followers to hate. And the consequences are deadly serious:

• Millions of adults are being denied access to vaccines they’ve relied on for years.
• Parents in Florida just lost the protections of school vaccine requirements.
• $500 million in critical research into lifesaving immunizations has been gutted.

Just this week, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stood alongside Donald Trump to declare, with no real scientific basis, pregnant women should avoid Tylenol for fear of causing autism. He’s putting pregnant women in a terrible position, deciding whether to trust their own doctors or the highest levels of the government. This will directly affect many, many Americans. 

This isn’t just about outrageous headlines and news clips. It’s about whether you and your loved ones can stay safe and healthy.

We can’t sit back and wait for the next election to fix it. The best way to push back is to build power now — by organizing, speaking out, and supporting leaders and candidates who will defend science and common sense.
