PLC calls for Ombudsman probe on babies born alive after abortions

The Pro Life Campaign has written to the Ombudsman for Children, calling for an urgent investigation into the treatment of babies born alive in Irish hospitals following abortion procedures. The appeal follows disturbing revelations from the HSE, in response to a parliamentary question from Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn, confirming that 12 babies were born alive after abortion in 2022 and died soon afterwards.

The PLC has also reviewed National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre reports from 2019–2022, showing at least 84 such cases in total. These findings raise grave concerns about the standard of medical care given to these babies. The PLC has asked the Ombudsman to establish if the rights of babies in these situations are being upheld, to clarify what safeguards exist, and to consider appointing an independent advocate for these children. We have also urged a review of Ireland’s legal framework to see if it leaves such children vulnerable to discrimination compared to other newborns.

Back in 2018, then Minister for Health Simon Harris dismissed concerns about this issue as “shock tactics” when pro-life Oireachtas members challenged him. We now know the concerns were justified. This is first and foremost a humanitarian issue. In our correspondence, we called on the Ombudsman to act without delay.

HSE admits bias in withdrawal of funding from life-affirming counselling agencies

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD challenged the Minister for Health in a recent parliamentary question over the suspension of all state funding to agencies that support women during an unplanned pregnancy but refuse to facilitate abortion.

In their reply to Deputy Tóibín, the HSE admitted they “changed the model of service delivery” in line with the introduction of abortion and as a result of that “some services were unable to operate in that framework due to their ethos.”

To translate it simply, the HSE is really saying: after abortion was legalised, we cut off all groups that refused to comply with our pro-abortion stance, no matter how valuable their services were for women facing an unplanned pregnancy.

Maria Steen

Voter choice and debate stifled in Presidential Election

Pro-life supporters and many others across Ireland are rightly disappointed that there will be no one contesting the upcoming Presidential Election who is prepared to speak up for life or challenge the prevailing groupthink in public debate.

While the Pro Life Campaign never endorses candidates, it is regrettable that the only remaining pro-life contender was excluded by an orchestrated effort from the main parties. It raises serious questions about shutting down debate and limiting who the public can vote for. Unless tackled, it will further erode trust in our electoral system.

As always, the Pro Life Campaign will provide guidance on candidates’ stances before polling day, but note that all three nominees support abortion in some form.

We congratulate Maria Steen for putting her name forward in the nomination process and for courageously defending the right to life at all times.

** Annual Pro Life Campaign dinner a huge success!
------------------------------------------------------------

Emphasising the humanity and intrinsic value of the unborn child, guest speaker at last weekend’s pro-life dinner in Dublin, former government minister Éamon Ó Cuív recalled the story of Galway native Maolra Seoighe who was unjustly executed in 1882 for a murder he didn’t commit. Mr Ó Cuív said that as he approached the gallows, still protesting his innocence, Mr Seoighe touchingly said: “Ta mé chomh neamhchiontach leis an leanbh sa mbroinn - I am as innocent as the child in the womb”.

Addressing the 600 attendees at the annual Ceiliúradh Cois Life event, organised by the Pro Life Campaign, Mr Ó Cuív told attendees that in addition to working to reduce abortion numbers, attention also needed to be given to end-of-life issues. He warned that in other jurisdictions, demands for euthanasia and assisted suicide appeared limited at first, “a toe in the door,” but once admitted, the door was prised wide open.

Calling on people to oppose the introduction of euthanasia before it’s too late, he encouraged attendees to work to improve end-of-life care, including palliative services and support for carers.

It was wonderful to see such a large turnout at the event - of young and old alike - from across the country.
