John,
With less than one week until a potential government shutdown, President
Trump is doing what he does best: blowing up negotiations, spreading lies,
and playing political games with the lives of poor and working Americans.
Why? Because Trump, Congressional Republicans, and their corporate allies
would rather shut the government down than protect health care for poor
and working people.
Trump was never serious about securing a deal. He demanded Democrats
accept the extreme MAGA House bill with zero input, and then called any
counteroffer “ridiculous and unserious” before cancelling a meeting to
negotiate.
What exactly does he think is so ridiculous?
* Is it stopping devastating cuts that will kick millions off Medicaid?
* Is it extending funding that helps working families afford health
insurance?
* Is it helping families who will see their premiums skyrocket next year
if we don’t act now?
That’s not ridiculous. That’s common sense.
John, there’s
been lots of debate about what Democrats should do next. But make no
mistake:
If the government shuts down next week, it’ll be because Trump and
Congressional Republicans wanted it to — full stop.
Mike Johnson also just cancelled the final House workdays before the
deadline, cutting off the last chance to pass a new bill and keep the
government open.
It’s because Republicans have zero incentive to make a deal — they know
they can skip work and still get paid while federal employees work without
pay.
But Democrats are ready to pass a funding bill right now to keep the
government open and protect health care.
Next week is pivotal — not just because of the shutdown, but also because
of our end-of-quarter fundraising deadline.
We’re facing two critical tests of our grassroots movement’s power. Please
help us meet the moment, stand up for working people, and protect access
to health care.
