John,
I have to admit: On some issues, the Carney government is arguably not as awful as the Trudeau government.
But on others, it’s clearly just as bad!
Take Bill C-9, the “Combatting Hate Act.”
This new law would outlaw hate symbols and protests deliberately aimed at intimidating some groups or obstructing places of worship or other sensitive institutions.
Worryingly, it also removes a requirement for the consent of the provincial attorney general to prosecute a hate crime.
The police, and not a judge, would henceforth have the power to decide what is hate, so as to streamline the process for law enforcement.
This is an extremely dangerous measure for our freedom of expression.
It is similar to British law <[link removed]>, where 30 people on average get arrested every day, and many others are being harassed by the police, for social media posts deemed “offensive.”
In today’s world, where woke snowflakes see “micro-aggressions” everywhere and need “safe spaces” to protect themselves against common sense, anything can be deemed offensive, hostile, or hateful.
In the UK, the bar for these so-called hate incidents is very low, since the Crown Prosecution Service suggests hostility includes “ill-will, spite, contempt, prejudice, unfriendliness, antagonism, resentment and dislike.”
Imagine letting police question ordinary people because they may have been “unfriendly” toward someone else!
These “bad” emotions are perfectly normal, and all of us have felt and expressed them at one time or another.
Are we going to follow the Orwellian path already taken by the UK?
Are we soon going to be arrested for having been “contemptuous” toward someone???
John, the PPC has strongly defended freedom of expression since its founding.
As stated in our platform <[link removed]>, the definition of hate speech in the Criminal Code should be restricted to expression which explicitly advocates the use of violence against identifiable groups or persons, and not emotions.
After what we went through with covid, we cannot trust the established opposition parties in Ottawa to protect our basic rights.
