Why we need rhinos 🦏🌱
[link removed][…]ce=email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=world-rhino-day-2025-blog

By clearing vegetation, opening watering holes, and playing a role in seed dispersal and germination, these veritable groundskeepers are critical in creating healthy ecosystems.

Yet, despite their importance, rhinos face devastating threats.

Once abundant throughout Asia and Africa, rhinos have suffered a staggering 95% decline in population over the past century. The primary driver is demand for rhino horn, fueled by its use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and in carvings and jewelry.

But hope is growing. By reducing demand in rhino horn and supporting a shift within the traditional medicine community toward sustainable alternatives, WildAid and our partners are helping secure a future where rhinos and people thrive together.

Major marine enforcement victory in the Bahamas!

The Bahamas has taken a historic step forward in the fight against illegal fishing. After a year-long investigation led by Bahamian authorities and WildAid, three individuals have been convicted for their roles in running illegal foreign fishing charters.

The case marks the first-ever three-year fishing ban issued under the country’s Fisheries Act and has resulted in nearly $300,000 in penalties and fees to date.

Local Bahamian businesses, long under pressure from hundreds of illegal foreign charters, have welcomed the arrests. By leveling the playing field, these convictions help ensure that fishery resources remain sustainable for local communities.

For WildAid’s marine team, this outcome is proof of what’s possible when training, planning, and commitment come together: real accountability and real consequences for those who threaten marine resources and fail to comply with laws and regulations.

Take a deeper dive into the case and why it’s a huge win for oceans and people here ([link removed]) .
When it comes to climate change, your voice is powerful 💪
[link removed]

For over 20 years across Asia and Africa, WildAid has used celebrity ambassadors like Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, HRH Prince William, and Lupita Nyong’o to deliver conservation messages. But not for the reason you may think. Being globally famous is helpful, yes, but it is their status as trusted messengers that make them effective. Research shows celebrities rank as high as scientists in public trust and credibility on environmental issues.

When it comes to climate change in the United States, you are the celebrity. While the US public ranks celebrities low in trust, across demographics friends and family rank highly on climate issues. That means that for your community, you are more powerful than even the most famous faces.

Your role as a friend or family member gives you a tremendous head start over other messengers like politicians or celebrities.

This month, let’s ask our friends and family: Who do you trust most on environmental issues? Have you been more swayed by public media or by private conversations and why?

In case you missed it last week: We hosted WildAid Live to celebrate 20 years of shark conservation! 🦈

In the 30-minute livestream ([link removed]) , we took a deep dive into two decades of shark conservation at WildAid. From reducing shark fin consumption in China by 80% to strengthening protections for vital shark habitats across the world, we’ve learned that lasting marine conservation is within reach with the right tools, partnerships, and people.

Longtime ocean advocate and friend of WildAid Wendy Benchley joined the conversation as a special guest, sharing: “The world now understands that sharks are vital to keeping the ocean healthy. They are like the CEOs or governors of the sea, and this is a unifying force for safeguarding them EVERYWHERE across the globe.”

If you missed the livestream, or would like to share it with others, you can access the recording here ([link removed]) .
