I don’t write emails like this, normally. I take photos. I document what I see and create portraits of it. Sadly, most of the portraits I make as an undercover investigator are of moments that don’t belong in a photo album or picture frame.
World Day for Farmed Animals is a bittersweet day for people like me. Because it reminds us that we’re still not taking the kind of pictures of animals that we so desperately want to see.
As human beings, we usually take photos and make portraits of things that we want to remember. For me … I’ve mostly stopped remembering. Because I’ve seen too much. But I keep taking photos—of the cruelty, of the unimaginable abuse. Because I hope that somehow, some way, they help.
For the next week, leading up to World Day for Farmed Animals, a group of generous donors is matching all gifts to help create a different portrait to remember these animals by.
I long for the day when I’m taking photos of bright, healthy hens spreading their wings in the sunlight, not stepping on each other as they barely cling to life, in pain, in the dark. Together, we can get there.
Thank you for remembering with me,
