MADISON, Wis.* – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) urges all boaters to prioritize safety this fall, especially when boating in cold water conditions.

So far in 2025, 13 boating fatalities have occurred [ [link removed] ]. In many cases, a life jacket was not worn.

“Life jackets are the simplest and most effective safety way to save lives,” said Major April Dombrowski, DNR Recreational Safety and Outdoor Skills Bureau Director. “Boating emergencies happen in the blink of an eye; wearing a life jacket is the single most effective step to protect yourself and your loved ones.”

One wearable life jacket is required for each person on board a boat and must fit properly. In addition to the wearable life jackets, a throwable personal flotation device, such as a ring buoy or standard seat cushion, is required for every boat longer than 16 feet.

Here are key safety reminders for boaters planning fall outings:

* Wear your life jacket. Ensure it is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket. Hypothermia can impair your ability to swim or stay afloat, and a life jacket drastically increases your chances of survival if you fall overboard.
* Dress appropriately. Layer your clothing to manage changing temperatures.
* Check weather and water conditions before leaving. Cold fronts or storms can quickly create dangerous boating conditions.
* Avoid alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgment and slows reaction times, reducing your ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
* Tell someone your boating plans. Always let someone on shore know your departure time, route and expected return time.
* Check your equipment before heading out. Carry safety equipment such as a whistle, throw rope, first aid kit and a charged cell phone in a waterproof case.
