Hi John, it’s Hannah Pingree.
I don’t know about you, but I spend too much time on my cell phone. I’ve definitely witnessed my husband and 12 and 14-year-old kids struggling to spend less time on their phones and devices, too. That’s why I’m happy to see that more and more school districts are implementing cell phone bans during the school day. As Governor, I will work with schools to take cell phones out of the classroom.
Before I tell you why I feel so strongly about this cell phone policy, can you chip in to my campaign for Governor of Maine ahead of my big end-of-quarter fundraising deadline?
We know these cell phone policies work because schools that have a strong cell phone ban in place have seen:
✅ Increased in-person socialization of students
✅ Increased engagement in classrooms
✅ Decreased student suspensions and disciplinary eventThose sound like big wins to me, John.
And here’s the thing — as a parent of an 8th and 9th grader, I know how important it is to be able to contact our children during the school day in case of an emergency. That’s why each district can come up with plans that make sense for their schools – because what works at my kids’ rural public school will look different than other places. But we can’t let Big Tech companies control our attention spans, and this is just a small step to curb their influence on our kids.
We’ve seen the academic and social benefits of taking cell phones out of classrooms in schools. Now here’s my challenge to you: chip in right now and THEN put your phone down for an hour to focus on family, friends, and enjoying the present moment!
