Hi John,
As you may have seen in recent news, Durham County is unfortunately unable to sponsor Durham Pride this year due to Trump targetting communities like ours with his vague anti-DEI executive orders and threats to cut federal funding. Durham County relies on over $100 million in federal funding for vital programs and services. These funds are used year-round to support Durham's most vulnerable neighbors, like the LGBTQ+ community, through public health services, food assistance, and new parent support programs. The county had to weigh the difficult balance of this unhinged administration and the risk of losing funding that our county residents rely on everyday.
But here's the thing about Pride: It has never been about the government. It has never belonged to the government or elected officials — and it definitely doesn't belong to Trump. It comes from and belongs to the people.
That's why I am raising $10,000 in grassroots contributions to support Durham Pride and the LGBTQ Center of Durham. Friends and allies like Singer Clay Aiken have already stepped up to MATCH what we raise. Every dollar you give will be doubled, up to $20,000, so your support goes twice as far.
