California’s democracy is under attack with Proposition 50 — a cynical, partisan power-grab that threatens our state’s integrity and mocks the entire idea of representative government. Spearheaded by Governor Gavin Newsom, Prop. 50 aims to gerrymander U.S. House Districts to eliminate five Republican seats and replace them with Democrats, rigging the system for political gain. I’m thrilled to partner with the State of Gold podcast to launch their exclusive, hard-hitting special video episode that exposes Prop. 50’s dangers, and makes a powerful case for why we must defeat it.
The State of Gold podcast, launched just months ago, ironically just shortly after I launched So, Does It Matter?, has become a vital platform for candid conversations with California’s political heavyweights. Prop. 50 has been a frequent topic in their interviews, and now, podcast founder Jon Slavet has compiled insights from 20 key players in California politics into a gripping mini-documentary. I asked Jon what motivated them to put together this video. Slavet told me, “We decided to create this mini-documentary that reflects our own views at State of Gold, as well as the many leaders, activists and citizens we’ve spoken with across the state. Namely, that Proposition 50 is not only a bald-faced power grab but also terrible public policy.” He concluded by emphatically saying, “California has outsized influence in our nation and we should be leading the way on democracy. No on 50!”
