The Supreme Court could decide to revisit Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark ruling that secured marriage equality across the country.
If that decision is overturned, marriage equality could be wiped off the map in 31 states — instantly.1
These states have constitutional amendments or laws banning same-sex marriage on the books, which were made unenforceable by Obergefell.2 If SCOTUS reverses course, those bans could snap back into effect overnight — leaving millions of LGBTQ+ Americans without the right to marry, or to have their marriages recognized, depending on where they live.
That would create a devastating patchwork of rights. Families could find themselves married in one state and strangers in another. Parental rights, spousal benefits, hospital visitation, and more could all be stripped away.
