1. Dr. Benjamin appeared in coverage of the CDC advisory panel’s COVID-19 vaccine vote.

 

ABC’s report covered the panel’s decision to scale back universal COVID-19 vaccine recommendations and explored the implications for public confidence. Dr. B. was featured reacting to the change as part of the national coverage.

 

2. Dr. Benjamin was quoted in about Sen. Bill Cassidy’s relationship with Secretary Kennedy.

 

The article examined Cassidy’s political challenges after backing Kennedy for HHS Secretary. Dr. B. said Kennedy’s dysfunction had undermined Cassidy’s credibility and noted that the senator’s attempt to balance politics with science backfired.

 

3. Dr. Benjamin was cited in about Senate scrutiny of the CDC under Kennedy.

 

Ahead of former CDC Director Susan Monarez’s testimony before the Senate HELP Committee, NBC reported on concerns about how decisions are being made at the CDC. Dr. B. was featured describing Kennedy’s leadership as chaotic and driven by emotion rather than science.

 

4. Dr. Benjamin was quoted in about threats to vaccine protections following Monarez’s dismissal.

 

The piece covered Monarez’s warnings to Congress about risks to childhood vaccines after her firing as CDC director. Dr. B. underscored the unprecedented danger these moves pose to public health protections, saying the situation was unacceptable and unlike anything seen before.

 

5. Dr. Benjamin talked to about the rise of vaccine tourism across state lines.

 

The article reported on Americans traveling to other states to receive COVID-19 vaccines amid new restrictions. Dr. B. described the situation as a tragedy and called the federal government negligent for failing to ensure consistent access, stressing the need for clearer national guidance.

 

6. Dr. Benjamin offered perspective in about declining vaccination rates in Florida.

 

The reporting highlighted how low vaccine coverage could worsen health risks during hurricane season. Dr. B. warned that outbreaks in shelters and other emergency settings could compound the strain on already vulnerable populations.

 

Advocacy

 

On Sept. 19, APHA Executive Director Dr. Georges Benjamin sent a to congressional leaders urging them to pass a bipartisan, short-term continuing resolution that fully funds public health agencies and programs, ensures the administration spends FY 2025 and FY 2026 funds as directed by Congress, and permanently extends the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits.

 

Dr. Benjamin also emphasized the need to reject harmful cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services and protect access to affordable health coverage for millions of Americans.
