I last wrote about the Liberals’ gun buyback program in March of last year.

At that time, former Conservative Senate Opposition Leader Don Plett had received a response to an Order Paper question he had submitted.

For those unfamiliar, an Order Paper question is a written inquiry that, after a 48-hour notice period, is posted on the Order Paper. The responsible Minister is expected to provide a comprehensive answer to the question within 45 sitting days.

Senator Plett had asked the Government of Canada about its expenditures on the gun buyback program, first announced by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on May 1, 2020.

The response was startling. The Liberals revealed they had spent $41,904,556—just under $42 million—on this program. More alarming was the fact that no firearms had been “bought back” under the program at that time.

If you thought this wasteful initiative had quietly disappeared under new Prime Minister Mark Carney, you’d be mistaken.

This week in Ottawa, we learned that the Mr. Carney will move forward with spending up to $742 million on their gun buyback program, beginning with a pilot project in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

What’s even more concerning is a leaked audio recording involving Liberal Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, in which he admits that if it were up to him, the Carney government wouldn’t be moving forward with the gun confiscation plan. This was reported by the Toronto Sun.

The recording further reveals that the Liberals are pushing ahead with this program solely for political reasons—in a word: Quebec. The Minister admitted as much, stating: “Quebec is in a different place than other parts of Canada, right? And this is something that’s very much a big, big, big deal for many of the Quebec electorate that voted for us, right?”

From my perspective, does spending over $700 million on buying back legal firearms—while ignoring criminals and illegal guns—sound like a logical program to you? Ironically, the Minister himself said in the same conversation: “Don’t ask me to explain the logic to you on this.”

On that point, the Liberal Minister and I agree: there is no logic to it. Just more wasteful Liberal spending. Rather than using these funds for improvements at our borders and ports with high tech scanners or recruiting new CBSA agents to secure our borders from drug and gun smugglers, we see the Minister ignoring his own analysis of the gun buyback scheme.

Despite his private concerns, the Minister also made clear he would proceed regardless, saying that he was only following orders.

“But this is the mandate I was given by Carney to complete this.”

My question this week: Do you agree with Prime Minister Carney and his $742 million gun buyback scheme?
