It was hard to bring myself to bring myself to watch Trump address the United Nations today. It was too cringe. After a few minutes, I gave up and read the transcript later — and it was somehow worse in writing. He was given 15 minutes. He took an hour because, of course, he has no respect for rules. And in that hour, he managed to completely disgrace the United States in front of the entire world.

Let’s run it down. He told every member state that their countries were going to hell. He blasted the UN audience, insisting it wasn’t “living up” to its potential—as if a six-time bankrupt businessman has any authority to judge potential. He lied. Repeatedly. Calling green energy a scam and accusing world leaders of allowing uncontrolled migration. Essentially, he spent an entire hour telling the world that everyone else was failing at their jobs and that they should just follow his lead. He really said that out loud. And then he said the only true statement of his whole speech: that he put “I’m always right” on a hat.
It is so embarrassing to be an American right now. Reading it, I kept flashing back to being seventeen, when my dad would coincidentally have trumpet practice every time I invited a boy over. I just wanted it to end. I was mortified that the boy would think I was weird. And the blazing, grating sound made it impossible to hear yourself think. That’s exactly what it felt like today: trapped, mortified, listening to hot air you can’t escape, wishing it would just be over.
But here’s the thing: Trump’s speech wasn’t just embarrassing, it was diabolical. He dismissed climate change as “the greatest con job ever perpetrated,” and warned that countries investing in renewable energy would fail. This rhetoric is actively harmful because it undermines global efforts to combat climate change and sets the U.S. back while the rest of the world moves forward making us LOSERS in more ways than one.
He also attacked the UN for not “living up” to its potential, accusing it of being ineffective and full of “empty words.” But then, after blasting the UN in his address, he met one-on-one with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and said he’s “behind [the UN] because I think the potential for peace at this institution is great.” What the actual fuck?! Psychotic…and destabilizing. He is sending mixed signals to the international community and eroding trust in American leadership
Nowhere is that more obvious than in his handling of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. After years of being overtly hostile towards Ukraine and NATO, blaming the Biden administration for the war and sucking up to Putin at every opportunity, Trump suddenly did a full 180 and took the maximalist position — that Ukraine should take back ALL of its territory, and even possibly take some of Russia’s territory. Mr. No More Wars even suggested NATO should shoot down Russian planes when they violate their airspace and sadly mourned that nothing came of his relationship with Putin. What is anyone supposed to believe at this point?
Yesterday, the world watched an American president lecture them on failure, dismiss science, and claim infallibility all while the U.S. grapples with daily public shootings, ICE detaining hardworking people from the streets, the highest maternal mortality rate in the industrialized world, and the lowest employment rate since COVID. But tell me, Trump: is America great yet?
