Dear John, 

This week, we have exciting updates to share about PIF’s leadership. First, Juliet K. Choi has been elected inaugural chair of the PIF executive committee! Juliet is president and Chief Executive Officer of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) and elected unanimously by our executive committee. We have also added two new members to our steering committee –  Yesenia Cuello, executive director at and co-founder of NC FIELD, and David Gonzalez Rice, senior vice president of public policy at the National Low-Income Housing Coalition. Finally, our executive committee has named me Executive Director of PIF. I am deeply honored to work alongside Juliet, Yesenia, David, PIF’s executive and steering  committees, and you to continue to defend and protect immigrant families. Good news to share! On September 18, The judge in State of California v. United States Department of Agriculture issued a temporary restraining order to stop USDA from taking any further steps to demand SNAP recipient’s personal data or impose fiscal penalties on the 20 states and DC that are parties in the lawsuit.  In addition, a CMS final rule, “Medicaid Eligibility Changes Under the Affordable Care Act of 2010; Giving States Freedom to Use Immigration Information to Determine State Residency for Medicaid Eligibility,” cleared OMB’s EO 12866 regulatory review. It’s unclear how the rule will change eligibility; a notice of proposed rule was never published, but we will share when the final rule is published.  See additional updates in PIF and NILC’s Executive Branch Spotlight.

Tomorrow, 9/25, our campaign strategist Esther Reyes will be a featured panelist at the 2025 Immigration Summit, hosted by Children at Risk, the Texas Family Leadership Council, and the Children Thrive Action Network. This summit will offer a timely space to explore how recent federal and state actions are affecting children’s safety, mental health, and futures. We will reflect on current realities, share tools for response, and uplift strategies that protect and empower immigrant families. The National Immigration Law Center has provided two new Know Your Rights resources to provide individuals with as much information as possible to make the best decisions for their families in these uncertain and challenging times. The first resource provides more information about the safety of using CBP Home, while the second shares information for green card holders on what the law says about who can be deported and offers safety planning tips if you might be at risk.
