Last week, our team attended the Beyond Impact 2025 conference and participated in a plenary session titled “Blame the Strategy, Not the Voters: What Gaza Meant to Muslims.” The stage at Beyond Impact 2025 brought together Nada Al-Hanooti, National Deputy Organizing Director; Mohamed Gula, National Organizing Director; and Iman Awad, National Policy Director at Emgage Action, joined by Layla Elabed, Co-Founder of the Uncommitted Movement, and Mark Crain, Executive Director of Dream of Detroit & EmgageUSA Board Member. Together, they engaged in an important dialogue on the pressing issues confronting the Muslim community. We highlighted how the 2024 election presented Muslim Americans with fresh challenges while emphasizing their role in shaping future national discussions.
The session focused on guiding attendees through an important conversation about building a democracy that truly serves our community, grounded in justice, while carrying the burden of witnessing one of the most documented genocides in history and still answering the call to defend U.S. democracy. The discussion showed that Muslim Americans exist as multiple groups with distinct challenges and beliefs which influenced their voting choices. The discussion about strategy enabled us to establish mutual understanding while addressing missed opportunities in the last election cycle and how future policy changes can work towards rebuilding a brighter future.
