Dear John,
In times of crisis, what kind of leaders do we want representing us? Between rising autocracy, climate change, and brewing global tensions, the world has clearly become a more dangerous place.
I took to ourhttps://uglypolitix.substack.com/p/trumps-amateur-hour-un-performanceUglyPolitix substack ([link removed]) today to unpack how Donald Trump – who addressed the United Nation’s 80th General Assembly this week – is the worst kind of person to have leading the world’s most powerful nation, especially in times like these.
Compared to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who issued stark warnings about this “age of reckless disruption and relentless human suffering,” America’s would-be dictator offered only personal grievances and cheap spectacle.
Guterres laid out the urgent choices facing humanity: peace rooted in law, climate justice, human rights, and strengthening multilateral institutions. Trump dismissed the climate crisis as a “con job,” painted migration as an “invasion,” and re-litigated a decades-old property deal.
The UN system, flawed as it is, was built to prevent global conflict and defend human dignity. Treating it with contempt weakens the very framework the world depends on.
That’s why it’s so vital we call this out, and why Open Britain is committed to exposing the dangers of performance politics and defending democracy at home and abroad.
I hope you’ll take a moment to read my full piece on Ugly Politix, and if you can, support our work so we can keep holding power to account.
