Hi there John, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Shannon O’Brien, and I am proud to have been elected by my fellow Montanans as the new Chair of the Montana Democratic Party. I want to tell you a little bit about myself, and most importantly, how our party can turn things around. Long before I got involved in politics, I was a history teacher and basketball coach, John. Eventually, I moved to Montana to grow a family and pursue my Doctorate in Education — and I fell in love with our state. The people, the communities, and our treasured outdoor spaces. For years, I served as education policy advisor for Governor Bullock — and when I saw Montana Republicans try again and again to shortchange our public schools, I knew I had to take action. So in 2020, I ran for State Senate — and I won. In Helena, I proudly supported bills to invest in our public schools, deliver property tax relief to working-class families, and support the farmers and ranchers who power Montana’s economy. John, 2024 was a gut punch for all of us. It showed us that politics as usual isn’t the way forward. To win back the voters we’ve lost, we need to do things differently. As Democrats, we need to work together and focus on the kitchen-table issues that impact every community across Montana — affordability, good-paying jobs, strong public schools, and health care. I know winning back Montana isn’t going to be easy work, but that’s exactly why I accepted this position. I’ve never shied away from a challenge, John — and I’m not going to start now. Listen, I am under no impression that Montana Democrats will win back thousands of voters overnight. But by taking our message to Republicans, Democrats, and independent voters alike, we can earn back Montanans’ trust one day, one month, one election at a time.
