SEPT. 24, 2025 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released three tables on 2025 Government Organization counts: Government Units by State, Local Governments by Type and State, and Special District Governments by Function and State.
The Census Bureau also released the Organization Public Use File for State and Local Government Structures, a comprehensive database of U.S. state and local governments and their major agencies.
The counts are presented by characteristics such as government type, state, population size, group, and function. The data also provide detailed information on school systems, including independent and dependent districts.
The Census of Governments, which includes the Government Organization counts, collects state and local government data every five years in years ending in “2” and “7.”
