September is Hunger Action Month
Each September, communities across the country come together to raise awareness of the very real challenges families face in accessing enough food. Here in Northern Virginia, thousands of children and adults experience food insecurity every day, often forced to make impossible choices between groceries, housing, and other essentials.
By the Numbers: Real Neighbors in Need
NVFS is deeply embedded across Northern Virginia, supporting families in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and the surrounding cities. Across this region, more than 231,600 of our neighbors are food insecure ( Feeding America <[link removed]>).
According to recent research from the Capital Area Food Bank <[link removed]>, food insecurity is increasing for local families of all backgrounds—regardless of income, race, or neighborhood. With additional reductions in SNAP benefits and wages that cannot keep pace with the soaring costs of food, housing, and essentials, demand for assistance is only expected to grow.
“ The high cost of food is more than just a statistic or a news headline; it’s a daily challenge for many in our community.”
— Navara Cannon, NVFS Staff
Our Anti-Hunger Work: More Than Food, Pathways to Stability
NVFS addresses hunger by meeting immediate needs while helping families build long-term stability.
* At the SERVE Campus Hunger Resource Center , families receive emergency food assistance, nutrition education, and strategies for eating on a budget.
* Emergency food is also distributed through other NVFS programs, such as the NVFS Multicultural Center and Early Childhood Centers.
* Our integrated service model ensures that when families come to us for food, they are also connected with housing, workforce development, mental health, and other supports—helping them move from crisis to stability.
You Can Make a Difference
The Hunger Resource Center is powered by donations of food, financial contributions, and the commitment of volunteers.
