PLASTIC FREE CHALLENGE
Since 2018 we have been challenging people to participate in our 30 days plastic free/reduce as best you can challenge.
Each year I have asked people to start with a plastics audit. It is something I do myself, and have done for many years. You can't really know how much single use plastic you bring into your life unless you measure it. ?
So, come along on this challenge .
Start with keeping all the plastic that comes into your home for a week, longer if you wish.
Save what you believe to be recyclable as well as single use nonrecyclable items. This includes even scraps of plastic. The seal around jars, the plastic wrapper around the bottle of wine, shrink wrap, the plastic inside a box of crackers you thought was just housed in cardboard.
At the end of the week, spread out the plastic waste and have a good look. If you are doing this audit for more than a week, take inventory at the end of each week for comparison.
Take a photo of it, or weigh it if possible, or write down the items. I continually am amazed how much plastic seeps into my home, even after trying to eliminate as much plastic as possible for years.
Recycle what you can. Remember that generally one #1 and #2 plastics are truly recyclable.
Once you know where the plastic is coming from, you can reduce the amount. ?
Each week in October I will send some tips and information on how to reduce your plastic waste.
Would love to hear how you are managing, any tips you may have, and obstacles you have run into.
Good luck.
Sustainably yours
Helene
