Los Feliz chase ends after PIT maneuver, suspect drives over several spike strips

A slow-speed chase in Los Feliz Monday night took a bizarre and dramatic turn when the suspect drove over several spike strips, fleeing on shredded tires and escaping a police PIT maneuver. The chase ended in a lengthy standoff near Los Feliz Boulevard and Serrano Avenue when Los Angeles police slammed into the suspect's SUV a second time and disabled it. Police forced the driver out of the car around 11 p.m. after officers deployed tear gas inside the vehicle. The suspect was on the ground when multiple officers swarmed him and took him into custody. During the pursuit, the SUV drove over about six spike strips and damaged all four tires. A police cruiser also performed a PIT maneuver on Hollywood and Harvard boulevards, but the driver was able to continue fleeing at slow speeds after spinning out. AIR7 was over the chase around 9:30 p.m. as the suspect drove on Hollywood Boulevard while multiple LAPD cruisers followed. There were multiple times the driver would come to a complete stop, but then continue the pursuit.

LA County man pleads guilty to delivering deadly dose of fentanyl via drone

A Los Angeles County man has pleaded guilty to using a drone to deliver fentanyl and other drugs to people, including one woman who died of a fatal overdose in 2023. Christopher Laney, now 36, entered his plea on Monday. His charges, distribution of fentanyl and intent to distribute methamphetamine, carry a sentence of between five and 60 years in federal prison, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice shared in 2024, when he was charged. At the time, prosecutors said that Laney used a drone that was not registered with the Federal Aviation Administration to transport fentanyl from his Lancaster home to the parking lot of a nearby church. Laney is said to have used the aircraft in Jan. 2023 to deliver $80 worth of fentanyl to a person who then provided it to the victim, a woman only identified in the indictment as J.K. She was found dead the next day of a fatal drug overdose, prosecutors noted.

California 12-year-old accused of stealing parents’ truck, engaging in high-speed pursuit

Sheriff’s deputies are used to following vehicles on wild pursuits, but the person behind the wheel during a speedy Monday morning chase was far from the usual suspect — it was a 12-year-old boy accused of taking his parents’ truck on a joyride to school, authorities said. Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call shortly before 7 a.m. regarding a boy who had taken his parents’ vehicle to his former school on Caymus Drive in south Sacramento. He knocked over several traffic cones by the school and then drove away, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle but said the boy refused, leading authorities on a pursuit through the surrounding neighborhood where speeds reached up to 70 mph, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Amar Gandhi. The brief chase culminated in the boy crashing the truck into a patrol car and a parked vehicle, authorities said. Photos shared by the department show a Ford pickup with severe damage to the front driver’s side and a flat tire. No one was injured during the incident, and the boy was taken into custody. He was booked on suspicion of hit and run, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, reckless evasion of a peace officer, vehicle theft and receiving a stolen vehicle, Gandhi said.

BWC: Man runs at California officers with knife before fatal OIS

On Friday afternoon, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office released video of the fatal shooting of Nicholas Anderson in Loleta, who initially was in need of medical attention, was later accused of trespassing, and finally rushed officers armed with a knife. The video outlines the events that began after 2 p.m. on June 5. “Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a call for service at the Bear River Recreation Center,” Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal says in the video. “… Dispatch was advised that a male had entered the recreation center with a bandaged bloody arm and was dripping blood inside the building.” A video of the call to 911 is briefly played. “Hi, I work for Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria,” the caller states. “I got a guy up here in our rec center. He showed up with a big old bloody bandage on his arm, and now he’s in the shower and I asked him if he needs medical attention. He said, yes, he does. … he’s dripping blood everywhere.” Medical first response was sent to the scene to address the wound to the suspect’s left arm. Early interactions with Anderson were met with some hostility in the body-worn video footage shared Friday. Anderson initially misidentified himself. And despite the urging of paramedics, would not go to the hospital for further treatment.
