According to the National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes [ [link removed] ] there is a range of interpreting skills and experience for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. ASL (American Sign Language) Interpretation is the most prominent, but did you know that there are seven types of interpreting total, and the others are not always talked about. They include ASL Interpretation, Oral Translation, Transliteration, Protractile Interpretation, Tactile ASL Interpretation, Cued Speech Translation, and Trilingual Interpreting.

Each type of interpreting provides a different method of conveying the message they are translating. Interpreters are trained for effective communication to ensure that the individual(s) they are signing for have a consistent understanding of what is being signed. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a “qualified” interpreter means someone who can interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially, both receptively and expressively using any necessary specialized vocabulary.
