A giant of the civil rights movement, LDF has been a pillar of courage and an inspiration to every modern civil rights leader and organization, including AAI. That’s why we are honored to present the 2025 Gibran Award for Institutional Excellence to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) at the 22nd Annual Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 in Washington, DC.

 Dear Friend,

A giant of the civil rights movement, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) has been a pillar of courage and an inspiration to every modern civil rights leader and organization, including AAI. That’s why we are honored to present the 2025 Gibran Award for Institutional Excellence to the Legal Defense Fund at the 22nd Annual Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 in Washington, DC and we are pleased to share that LDF President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson will be joining us to accept the award.

Since its founding by the great Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 1940, LDF has carried the torch of justice, breaking barriers, and transforming our nation through landmark victories and unyielding advocacy. The de facto legal arm of the Civil Rights Movement, LDF has fought landmark battles for educational equity, voting rights, and constitutional protections.

From Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, hailed as “the most important American governmental act of any kind since the Emancipation Proclamation,” to present-day cases that are protecting voting rights and public education, LDF is strengthening the promise of the democratic process and civil rights for all communities. Celebrating its monumental 85th year in pursuit of justice, LDF stands as a beacon of courage, hope, and resilience in moments of crisis and in times of progress.

That's why we are privileged to recognize LDF’s extraordinary legacy and ongoing leadership in shaping a more just and inclusive America with this year’s Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Award for Institutional Excellence.

In this difficult moment for our country where our civil rights and civil liberties are increasingly under attack, it is groups like LDF that are fighting the toughest of battles and wielding the loudest of whistles to protect the rights of every American, as they have done so for decades.

I hope you will be with us as we recognize LDF, their incredible staff, and honor their great work over the last 85 years – and for many more years to come.

We hope to see you on October 23rd.
