“Street vendors are more than stands, more than carts, more than fruta y flores,
They are a story of resilience, endurance and dreams flying, flying, flying above the skies.”

Hey there,
From flowers to fruit cups to elotes preparados, street vendors bring the taste of home to every corner of this country. They’ve fed our communities for generations, whether it be a quick-stop breakfast on our way to work or a sweet treat after school. In recent months, as ICE steps into our neighborhoods to target and abduct our loved ones, street vendors have been forced to choose between providing for their families or risk abduction.
We’re a community that protects each other. More than ever, street vendors need us. Â
We collaborated with talented poets in our community to write pieces that highlight the voices of people who power our communities. Our latest poem “Beloved, Street Vendors” by Katherine Bahena-Benitez is a letter to street vendors everywhere whose resilience inspires us.
This letter is a reminder of the power within us to build a future that protects us all — from street vendors to students to our elders. ✊
Read our poem today, and share it online to remind your friends and neighbors of our commitment to protect what we hold dear: the people in our communities who are irreplaceable.
We’ll be having a conversation about this poem, and other poems in the series, on Instagram live on Friday, September 26, at 7 pm ET. Join us to dive into how to show up for the people who power our communities. 🤳Text “RSVP NOW” to 787-57, or simply click here if you’re on your phone, to be notified when we go live.
Remember to share this poem with your loved ones! Think of a person who could use this powerful message today, and pass it along.
In unity,
Ximena and the UWD team
