Dear Neighbor,

Sometimes the joy in life is as simple as an ice cream cone.

This was abundantly clear last week when we officially kicked off the first Tenderloin Ice Cream Pop-up to serve students of De Marillac and children from around the neighborhood. It was quite the sight — the Golden Gate Greenway was full of smiles thanks to a collective effort to make the neighborhood a place for all.

The Tenderloin is home to 3,500 children — yet there isn't a single ice cream shop.

But our children deserve to experience a childhood just like any other kid in the city. That's why we launched an ice cream pop-up in the Tenderloin, where over 150 kids played soccer and gossiped with their friends over a delicious, chilled cone.

Seeing the joy on their faces was priceless!

Revitalizing the Tenderloin will take time and require intentional investments in both joy and safety. But we can and must do more to ensure that our streets are both safe and clean for our children to enjoy.

Ultimately, it will take all of us working together to make a change. This ice cream pop-up was the first of three popup events in a pilot series and its success was a collective effort. Creating a safe and fun environment for our youth was only possible by bringing multiple groups together from across the neighborhood — a special thank you to St. Anthony's, Children of Shelter, San Francisco Police Department, and SF Hometown Creamery for making the children of the Tenderloin’s day that much sweeter.

Fillmore/Western Addition Open House
The Fillmore/Western Addition neighborhood has faced challenges for years – affordable housing, food insecurity, economic development — with little to no commitment to solutions from City Hall.

Tomorrow, the Mayor and I will be announcing the start of a Community Planning process for the Fillmore/Western Addition to address those concerns.

For the first time in years, the Mayor, Supervisor, and Department Heads from across City Hall will come together in the Fillmore to launch a community planning process and provide a platform for community members to have one-on-one conversations with us.

This open house is meant to be a space for bringing the community together, sharing concerns, and working towards solutions — together.

It’s the first event of many in this series for a community-building process — join us to help guide the direction of the City’s commitment to the Fillmore/Western Addition neighborhood.

WHEN: Wednesday, September 24th
TIME: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
WHERE: West Bay Conference Center

1290 Fillmore St.

Small Wins, Big Impact

Win of the Week: Treading Triumph

This week, we celebrate a meaningful victory for pedestrian safety in District 5: the sidewalk on the 100 block of Baker has been repaired!

Thanks to persistent advocacy from a local resident and the diligence of DPW, the damaged panel is now smooth and safe for everyone in the neighborhood. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen and to all District 5 walkers enjoying a safer stroll!
