Hey John,
Well, here we are, just about a week away from another self-inflicted MAGA crisis: an unnecessary, expensive, destructive, and dangerous government shutdown. Unfortunately, this is nothing new for Mary Gay: she was sworn into office in 2019 during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. 35 days without critical federal services courtesy of Donald Trump.
And here we go again.
Here’s the deal: Republicans control the White House, both houses of Congress, AND the Supreme Court — all three branches of government. And they STILL can’t pass a spending bill!
That’s because the democracy envisioned by our founding fathers requires compromise.
So, Democrats have offered one! Democrats are willing to vote to avert a shutdown if Republicans work with us to prevent health insurance costs from skyrocketing during the ongoing American affordability crisis. Seems reasonable, right? [[link removed]]ACA Cliff may mean huge premium shock for 22 million people in 2026 expert says. [[link removed]]
Right now if Republicans refuse to collaborate, monthly healthcare premiums for 22 million Americans who receive their health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) could increase by 75%.Johnson says Democrats will lose that battle if shutdown hinges on ACA subsidies. [[link removed]]
Thus far, between the House and the Senate, Republicans have refused to compromise to get the votes they need to pass a bill. So here we go, heading for another shutdown because they won’t do their jobs. All they’re thinking about is keeping Donald Trump and his big donors happy.
But enough of what Republicans in Congress think — we want to know what YOU think. What do you think Congress should be focusing on in this moment? [[link removed]]SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS [[link removed]]
Health insurance and care costs? Protecting our rights? Fighting inflation? Jobs? National security? There’s a lot going on right now, and it feels like this GOP is just focused on finding new ways to cause chaos that makes life harder on working families while they make more money and consolidate more power.
It’s gross. But Mary Gay is fighting back, and she wants to know what you think about what’s happening in Congress.
Thank you for taking a moment to get caught up on the latest in D.C., and for your feedback.
