This month, the nurses and advanced practitioners at Magee-Womens Hospital voted to unionize with SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania — a huge step forward for workers, patients, and our entire community.

For too long, we’ve called nurses “health care heroes,” but we’ve ignored their pleas for safe staffing levels, fair wages, and respect on the job. That has to change.

Nurses enter this profession because they care deeply about their patients. Too often, that calling puts them at odds with our profit-driven healthcare system. By unionizing, Magee’s nurses now have a real seat at the table to demand better pay, safer conditions, and stronger protections — not just for themselves, but for the patients they serve every single day.
