Hi John,
The UK has officially recognised the state of Palestine – a diplomatic step forward, but one that amounts to little more than a hollow gesture without meaningful action to end UK complicity in Israel’s atrocities.
The fact is that even as it recognises Palestinian statehood, Keir Starmer’s government is at the same time helping to undermine any chance of self-determination for Palestinians.
The UK continues to send arms to Israel – the most recent stats show that arms exports to Israel have actually surged under Labour.(1)
And the government continues to allow trade with Israel’s illegal settlements, also leaving Britain open for business with Israel’s surveillance and arms industries, helping to make the illegal occupation profitable.(2)
We need to end UK complicity in the genocide and put maximum pressure on Israel to end the occupation.
Will you email Peter Kyle, the new trade secretary, to demand sanctions on Israel to stop the genocide?
Yes, I'll take action ([link removed])
Recognition won’t in itself shift the dial, but could this move help ramp up pressure on the government to do more?
Perhaps. The UK’s obligations to prevent genocide and to end all support for the occupation were already clear before this announcement, but recognition puts the UK’s hypocrisy into even clearer focus.
Recognising Palestinian statehood without doing anything more to stop the destruction of its people and the theft of their land would be as absurd as it is cruel.
It would also shows huge double standards: after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, one of the reasons the UK gave for enforcing sweeping import, export and investment bans was to encourage Russia to cease actions which undermine its territorial integrity.(3)
It is clear Israel won’t stop the genocide or end the occupation unless it is forced to. The UK must apply meaningful sanctions on Israel now.
Will you write to the new trade secretary to demand sanctions to force Israel to comply with international law?
Yes, I'll take action ([link removed])
Thank you for your support,
