Kicking Off Climate Week, Billionaires Put on Notice!

At the anchor march in NYC 25,000 marched and at 187 locations across the country people pointed to the billionaires as the source of the nation’s polycrisis: the loss of our democracy, the attack on immigrants and people of color, skyrocketing costs and the escalating climate crisis. The event garnered significant mainstream media coverage.

350Brooklyn’s Sun Day Celebration

A toy solar car race, solar-popped popcorn, a sun singalong, a solar-powered space heater — 350Brooklyn’s Sun Day Celebration on September 21 had it all. Brooklynites had the chance to learn about residential and community solar opportunities from Brooklyn Solar Works, UPROSE, and Solar One. They listened to the music of Kyle Tigges and the Lost Goose String Band. Kids made art with The Brooklyn Painting School, and assembled solar-powered toy bugs. Solar may be in the crosshairs of the current administration in Washington, but it’s no longer a luxury good — it’s the cheapest way to make electricity. Stay tuned for the recording of our Sun Day panel discussion featuring Kat Trujillo of UPROSE, Solar One’s Roy Garzon, and Brooklyn College’s Professor Mike Menser. Here comes the sun!

New York Stands Up to Trump on Climate Town Hall

Friday, September 26 • 5:00 pm (Doors open 4:30 pm)
Church of the Village • 201 W 13th Street, New York, NY • Map

While the climate crisis accelerates and energy costs skyrocket, the federal government is ruthlessly boosting fossil fuels while suppressing renewables. Join Bill McKibben with New York City and State leaders at a locally-focused movement event during NYC Climate Week where we will envision what it would look like for New York to truly stand up to Trump on climate and for our future. Pre-registration required.

Tell NYS They MUST Protect our Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act!

Urge New York State to support our landmark climate law – the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act! Governor Hochul's agencies have drafted a State Energy Plan that would take us through 2040. But the draft as it is now won’t fully implement our amazing climate act – the CLCPA. Tell the State Energy Board that New Yorkers want bold action to lower pollution, lower utility bills, and make energy locally controlled. NY Renews has a one-click comment tool, as does New Yorkers for Clean Power. State agencies do respond to public pressure but to make this happen, we need everyone to weigh in! Comments are due by October 5th so send your comment today!

New York Gives In to Trump on Climate. Update on the Williams NESE project.

Last Thursday the Department of Public Service agreed with National Grid that the Williams NESE project should be part of its long-term gas plan. Although this is not as important legally as the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation)’s decision about issuing Williams a Water Quality Certificate, it is an indication that Governor Hochul supports building this huge fracked gas project that would run through the waters right off NYC. However, we are not giving up and you don’t need to either! Our plan is to keep the pressure on Governor Hochul and we need everyone to help. Call her to leave a message at 877-559-7809 and go to this website to send her online messages in opposition to this pipeline.

Changing Seasons, Changing Wardrobes. Consider the Climate!

Clothing is a source of human comfort, protection, and expression. But fashion accounts for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions – more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. There are better ways to fill our closets with the clothes we need and want. Check out our “Climate and Your Closet” web page for great tips!

Power Hour is a weekly session of phone-calling power. Each week we convene on Zoom to call, email, and tweet at our elected leaders about a different climate or environmental justice issue prioritized by 350BK and our allies.
