A few days ago, The New York Times reported that PA’s upcoming retention elections will have implications well beyond our state’s borders, and we wanted to ensure you saw it.
It could not be clearer: “What’s at stake is nothing less than control of the highest court in the most important swing state in the country.”
This November, three PA Supreme Court justices, elected as Democrats, are trying to keep their seats after serving ten years. On Election Day, PA voters will decide whether to retain these justices through a simple yes or no vote in non-partisan elections. If MAGA's anti-retention campaign succeeds, the court could have three vacancies until the Governor appoints and the Senate confirms new justices – which is unlikely, as this would require support from Republicans in the PA Senate – or until the next judicial election in 2027.

Here’s why it matters: The PA Supreme Court has heard critical cases in recent years involving challenges to election law as well as partisan redistricting. As the NYT article states, allTHREE of the Democratic justices up for retention voting in November voted against PA’s congressional maps as unconstitutional gerrymandering. In 2020, they ruled that drop boxes were permitted in the state, and in 2022, they upheld the state’s mail-in voting law. If MAGA’s anti-retention campaign succeeds, these rulings will look very different.
We need to meet this moment and make sure voters understand what’s at stake in these elections, team. But we can't do this alone.
We are just over a month away from these critical judicial elections. Will you help us continue to fund our voter engagement and GOTV door-knocking programs by rushing $25 today? We are depending on grassroots support to pull this off.
