Wild Salmon Center’s stronghold strategy is the centerpiece of Fisheries in October

For 25 years, we’ve deployed our uniquely proactive conservation strategy in key salmon rivers across the North Pacific. Now, a study examining the stronghold strategy is the October 2025 cover of the peer-reviewed journal Fisheries. “The science is clear that salmon rivers can safeguard food security, species biodiversity, and climate resilience,” says study co-author and WSC President & CEO Guido Rahr. “But this is also about a legacy of wild places that we owe to our children and grandchildren.”

Sneak peek: the next big reveals in salmon science

Wild Salmon Center salmon geneticist Dr. Tasha Thompson is the co-author of three forthcoming studies with exciting conservation insights for North Umpqua summer steelhead and spring Chinook salmon across their range. That’s not all. According to Dr. Thompson, the team has also developed a new genetic method to improve salmon analysis—one that’s applicable across all species. “Whether you’re looking at brook trout, or tigers, or spider monkeys, you can also use these tools,” she says.

Report from a summer of action across Alaska

This summer, Wild Salmon Center staff engaged hundreds of Alaskans across the state at events like SalmonFest in Ninilchik. Warmest thanks to everyone who visited our booths to help us to stop Pebble Mine, protect Bristol Bay, and defend the West Susitna region from an expensive, unnecessary industrial road. We’ll carry this momentum into fall and winter policymaking—where legislation like the Bristol Bay Forever Act could help advance permanent protections for Alaska’s best salmon rivers.
