We've been charting the violations to freedom of expression in the USA closely since Donald Trump came back to power and last week was a low point. A string of people lost their jobs because they didn't say the "right thing" about Charlie Kirk. The US Department of Defense introduced new rules demanding that journalists agree not to release information relating to the Pentagon without authorisation, even if it is unclassified. An Australian journalist was berated by Trump for simply asking a question about the president's finances.

Here at Index, we are extremely worried about the trajectory of what many still regard as the world's leading democracy. First Amendment protections are being tested every day.

Right now, we need to raise an extra £5,000 to support those most at risk, such as journalists and comedians in the USA, to have a voice.

Index was founded on the back of calls from Soviet dissidents. We continue to work closely with those in the former USSR. Putin, Lukashenka - they don't care for free speech any more than their Cold War counterparts did. But it's clear that the USA is creating its own band of dissidents. And we know that what happens in the USA doesn't stay in the USA. So today we are asking you one simple question - will you help us fight back?
