John,
The other day, the New York Times covered an interview where Ezra Klein encouraged Democrats to embrace “pro-life” candidates running in states like Ohio, Missouri, and Kansas to win back power.
This stance is strategically incorrect, it flies in the face of known realities on the ground, and it's worth a few minutes of push-back.
Klein is correct in highlighting that Democrats MUST focus on expanding the party tent, including embracing new kinds of candidates in areas outside of traditional swing states.
But reproductive freedom IS the issue that expands the tent. In fact, in Ohio, Missouri, and Kansas — the states he cites as examples — abortion-related ballot measures already went to the voters, and in each case, abortion rights won.
Abortion rights are more popular than the Democratic party, and it’s a catastrophic mistake to abandon one of the most effective persuasion issues available.
At Vote Pro-Choice, we see this firsthand. Our candidates run in some of the toughest races in the country. And whether we’re in rural districts, battleground states, or red strongholds, the overwhelming majority of voters agree: personal healthcare decisions during pregnancy should not be made by politicians.
Our own polling in Virginia shows that abortion rights are a top issue for voters under the age of 40, and Republican politicians appear most vulnerable when their anti-choice voting records are exposed.
The lesson is clear: this isn’t about going for the middle, it’s about going for the majority.
By building a lasting depth of connection with voters year-round, as well as supporting candidates with district-specific messaging on the issue, Vote Pro-Choice regularly secures wins in the very states mentioned as needing a bigger tent.
Thanks for all of your support, and wishing a sweet holiday to all those celebrating this week.
Warmly,
Sara Tabatabaie
