We just scored a major victory for families. A federal court has blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to gut essential health, education, and social service programs for low-income families.
For nearly 30 years, Republican and Democratic administrations have understood the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) as giving states the authority to offer essential low-income programs regardless of immigration status.
The Trump administration attempted to reverse this policy and impose immigration status verification on these services, which would have resulted in devastating funding cuts and program closures. But the court granted our request for a preliminary injunction, allowing these vital programs to continue while the case proceeds.
I joined a coalition of 20 attorneys general to challenge this reckless policy, and today’s ruling is proof that standing up to federal overreach works.
But this fight isn’t over. The Trump administration is relentless, and millions of Maryland families still depend on programs like:
✅ Head Start classrooms
✅ Title X family planning clinics
✅ Food banks and anti-hunger programs
✅ Domestic violence shelters
✅ Adult education and workforce programs
✅ Community health centers
