Office of the Texas Governor, Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities
Celebrating 75 Years of the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD), which was established in 1950 to promote full and equal access to lives of independence, productivity, and self-determination for Texans with disabilities.

For more than seven decades, GCPD has served as the state’s leading cross-disability advisory board, providing expert recommendations to the Office of the Governor and the Texas Legislature, supporting compliance with disability-related laws, and setting the standard for a statewide network of local committees.

Through its commitment to recognizing inclusive employers, media professionals and students; offering technical assistance and referral services; and advancing policy informed by citizen input and research, GCPD has played a vital role in building a more accessible Texas for all.

As Governor Abbott states in his proclamation, “the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities has played a significant role in the larger story of Texas and her people, but I know that its best days are yet to come. This milestone anniversary provides just cause for celebration.”
