Dear Neighbors,
Since my last newsletter, it’s unfortunate that there was another act of political violence in our nation. As the Chair of the United Black Legislators Caucus, I want to shed light and voice my solidarity for HBCU students, professors, staff, and university communities who were targeted as a direct backlash in the killing of a far-right political commentator. Every student, regardless of age, deserves to earn their education and engage in daily life without the fear of gun violence or threats to their safety, just for being who they are.
As a legislator, and as someone who grew up in neighborhoods where trauma and poverty too often go untreated, I understand the complexity of addiction, mental health, and systemic neglect. We can’t look away any longer. We must confront this crisis with the urgency it demands. That’s why I stand ready to support a special legislative session and will work with the Governor, my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and the people of Minnesota to push for bold, effective solutions—including an assault weapons ban. I will reintroduce HF 2828 in the 2026 session—empowering local governments to restrict dangerous weapons in public buildings and protect our communities. Protecting all Minnesotans is my top priority.
Gun violence in our state is on the rise. Our communities are hurting, and families are left shattered. From city streets to rural towns, no one is immune to the devastating toll of inaction. Violence is never the answer, and political differences must never be met with bullets.
This is not about politics. It’s about protecting lives. It’s about building a Minnesota where our children, elders, veterans, and public servants can live without fear. Enough is enough.
Our nation is at a pivotal moment, and we cannot sit idly by while bad actors continue to use divisive rhetoric that will inevitably lead to more harm and violence. My family fled the traumatic violence of war and bloodshed, coming to America where everyone, no matter what you look like, can succeed. This future belongs to everyone, especially our young children. We must set an example for them that even when it feels that our beliefs are too different, we must act on our shared values of humanity and treating each other with dignity.
And while the news continues with sensationalized headlines- I want to be very clear when I say, our country is uniquely dealing with a gun violence epidemic, and we must come together as a nation to not only condemn the ongoing violence but we have to take action in dismantling the cycles that perpetuate these senseless tragedies. Every life matter and we cannot afford to be distracted by culture wars and become desensitized to hate and violence in our country.

Last week, my Senate colleagues held a committee hearing [ [link removed] ] on gun violence prevention. Families of victims from the Annunciation tragedy, first responders, and medical professionals shared their heart-wrenching testimonies. I am disappointed in my Republican colleagues for their unwillingness to take the necessary steps toward finding a consensus on common-sense legislation to prevent future gun-related tragedies in our communities.
While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we will not stop fighting, nor will we accept this as a defeat. We must keep talking to one another, even amid disagreement. The voices of families who have lost loved ones to gun violence must and will be heard. I stand with them in their fight, committed to ensuring their voices continue to drive the change that must come.
My heart remains with Fletcher Merkel and Harper Moyski’s families, friends, survivors, and the entire Annunciation community that loved them. Their parents have endured a type of pain no one should have to suffer. I continue to pray for their healing and will do everything in my power to ensure we take meaningful action to help prevent another child being stripped from their family. Minnesotans deserve better, and I am committed to using my legislative tools to fight and advocate for our community every day.
It is an honor to represent our community at the capitol. During these polarizing times, please take care of yourselves, your family, and your neighbors. Please know I am here to support you in any way I can and your state legislator. I urge everyone to continue to lead with love, compassion, and understanding.
Sincerely,
Representative Samakab Hussein (65A)
Minnesota House of Representatives
