Our endorsed candidate, Debra Shigley, is running for a special election in Georgia State Senate District 21. This is a jungle-style special election to fill a State Senate seat recently vacated by Brandon Beach, who was appointed by the Trump administration to serve as U.S. Treasurer.

In the primary last month, Debra was the only Democratic candidate competing against 6 Republican candidates, 5 of whom were white men. Her opponents were all proud conservative, MAGA Republicans running on cutting taxes, restricting access to abortion, and instituting harsh crackdowns on immigration – thanks to hard work and tons of time connecting with voters directly, Debra made it to the general election (!!!!!), which is happening TOMORROW!

While this district is historically represented by Republicans, the special circumstances of this election, combined with increasing frustration over the actions of the current administration – and the fact that she already pulled off an incredible win – put Debra in a unique position to flip this seat.

Women in Georgia are already living under dangerous and scary abortion laws – and her opponent has vowed to restrict abortion access even further (we’re not sure how that would be possible…). We can’t let that happen. We must ensure she wins.

This news is exciting for so many reasons. For one, Debra absolutely destroyed her male opponents, securing nearly 40% of the vote, while the runner-up was a Republican man with 17.4%.

This means Her Bold Move’s 100% winning streak CONTINUES. Her Bold Move has not had a single loss in more than 10 months. This is unbelievable. We are proud, but we are not surprised. We are proving that if we take a chance and implement our tailored programs for qualified women running for office, regardless of where they live, we can win.

In 2024, the Republican (an incumbent at the time) running for this seat defeated his Democratic challenger with more than 70% of the vote. However, we knew not to count this Georgia district out. The results from this election show that Georgia is still very much a purple state, and like all of us, voters in the state are sick and tired of male GOP supermajorities writing dangerous laws about women’s bodies.

The bottom line: if you’re losing hope, given everything that’s been happening since Trump took office, we believe there’s plenty of reason for optimism. Incredible, progressive women are running for local and statewide office in red states and districts – and WINNING.
