Is Educational Choice One Letter Away in Washington State?

Thanks to the country’s first-ever federal tax-credit scholarship program, the door is open for nearly every K-12 student in our state to access scholarships that pay for educational expenses—but only if Governor Ferguson opts our state in. Taxpayers can receive dollar-for-dollar credits worth up to $1,700 against their federal income taxes for scholarship donations. Scholarships can help pay for school supplies, tutoring, transportation, special education services, after-school programs, private school tuition, and much more. The governor has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to extend educational choice to all Washington schoolchildren—at no additional cost to the state.

Parents can pay for educational supplies and services that best meet their child’s needs, and generous federal tax credits help make our state more affordable. The federal tax credit scholarship program is a win-win for Washington, but without Governor Ferguson’s leadership, those tax dollars will go to students in other states.

Act now! In the headline we ask if educational choice is one letter away from happening here in Washington.  There's no way of knowing, but what we do know for sure if we're silent, we should not expect change. Fortunately, you can use WPC's new "take action" tool to send a message to the governor. The letters are prewritten, and only take a minute or two to send. Tell Governor Ferguson to unlock these scholarships and ensure every family has real options for their child’s future.
Take action today! (And ask your friends to do the same!)

Get Younger Generations Involved!

If our freedoms and opportunities are to be preserved, our young people need educated on the free-market principles that create prosperity and maintain our freedoms. It should be clear by now, we cannot rely on most colleges or universities to impart these principles. This is not acceptable. At WPC, we engage younger generations with our Young Professionals program. Through educational and social events and mentorships, we engaging young people in information on principles and policy that ensures Washington's future success.

If you or someone you know is under 40 and looking to make connections and change the direction of our state, our Young Professionals Firework Gala Dinner on October 4th is the best way to start getting them involved. They'll have a chance to network and hear from thought leaders like Kevin Wallace and Todd Myers on how even when state-level change is difficult, we can still make direct, important change on a local level.

Why Fight for Washington?

It's no secret that for people who value free enterprise, individual liberty, and accountable government, Washington can be a difficult place to live. Supporting policies to make our state a better place can make one feel like Sisyphus, endlessly pushing a boulder up a hill only to see it fall to the other side.

And yet, history gives us hope.

Inspiring men and women across the world have faced countless hardships and lived in impossible situations but rather than retreat, chose to hunker down and do the hard work of making change.

At Washington Policy Center, we believe that Washington state is worth putting in that same work to defend. This is the theme of our latest magazine issue, which will be arriving in the mailboxes of our donors across the state any day now, but we are also making it available digitally for you here

If you have doubts about change being possible in Washington or about whether its worth continuing the effort when the results can be so disappointing, this is a must-read magazine for you. Click the picture for the digital version and feel free to share with a friend.

Washington Policy Center is a nonpartisan, policy research organization advocating for a thriving Washington state, where free-market principles create growth, innovation and opportunity for everyone.
