Hey John, it’s Matt Meyer, Governor of Delaware, here with an important message for you as students are headed back to school across the country.

Ten years ago, I was a sixth and seventh grade math teacher in Wilmington. But it doesn’t take a math teacher to tell you that the numbers aren’t adding up right now.

Here's the bottom line: Donald Trump and his GOP Congress dismantling the Department of Education hurts our kids and it hurts our economy.

John, while Donald Trump and the rest of his Republican trifecta are preoccupied with destruction, I’m focusing on the education and the livelihoods of the people of my state.

And I’m not alone. Democratic governors across the country are defending their states and protecting their constituents from these blatant attacks by Trump’s administration.

But I want to be clear: As Trump escalates his attacks and dismantles the Department of Education, while threatening funding for millions of students across the country, the effects will be deeply felt – from Main Street to Wall Street to Sesame Street.

When these cuts take effect, your kindergartner may lose their favorite teacher. Your middle schooler could lose their favorite after school program. Your high schooler may lose the extra help they need to achieve their goals. Your college student might even lose their student loan.

They’re making sure more of your tax dollars go to lining the pockets of billionaires and millionaires – all at the direct expense of our children's future.

But we aren’t going to take Trump’s extreme cuts lying down. So I'm asking personally, John: ​​Will you please sign on to stand with me and Dem govs in fighting back against Donald Trump’s shameless attacks on our children, public education, and the Department of Education? We need this grassroots team to stand with us and have our backs – so please, don’t wait.

I'm a teacher who got into this business because I believed our kids and their families deserve better.
