John — If we fail to learn from history, we doom ourselves to repeat it.

Following the Watergate scandal, which eroded the American people’s faith in their democracy and trust in the White House, Congress enacted reforms aimed at increasing accountability and restoring checks and balances within the government. Legislators passed a series of landmark reforms — the post-Watergate reforms — to prevent future presidents from abusing their office.

That trust is broken again — this time, at the hands of the most corrupt president in our country’s history. And we need to take bold action to repair this trust and protect our democracy.

While a member of the House of Representatives, I introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act, an ambitious set of reforms that would help ensure wannabe demagogues like Donald Trump cannot push our democracy to the brink again.

Since returning to the Oval Office, Trump has accelerated the process of tearing down our system of checks and balances and weakening our democracy.

His presidency, at its core, has been about consolidating power and eroding the rule of law, to enrich himself, his family, and friends. When his tenure in the Oval Office comes to an end, we must reinforce the separation of powers and ensure that no President can again bring us so close to one-man rule.

That’s why I reintroduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act in the Senate this week — this time, with additional provisions to address numerous new abuses of power that Donald Trump and members of his administration have engaged in since his return to the White House in January.

John, we cannot take our democracy for granted. And I won’t That’s why I’m asking:

Will you add your name in support of the Protecting Our Democracy Act today? We need to speak up and call out the abuses of power by the Trump admin — and we need to make sure no president can ever again dismantle our democracy as Trump has done.
