Cracks in the U.S. economy: Job growth slows 75% from a year ago

John, I wanted to make sure you saw this headline, because it says everything about where Donald Trump is taking our economy.

The U.S. added only 22,000 jobs last month. It was the weakest jobs report in years, and unemployment ticked up to its highest non-pandemic level since 2017. That means more families are struggling, and more people are going without work for months at a time.

These numbers didn’t just happen by accident. They’re the result of Trump’s choices:

• His reckless tariff war is making groceries, gas, and everyday goods more expensive for families.
• His spending cuts are stripping away the programs and services people depend on.
• And his attacks on clean energy are destroying tens of thousands of good-paying jobs and blocking the industries of the future.

Just weeks ago, the Trump Administration halted construction on a nearly finished $4 billion offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island that would have powered 350,000 homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Years of progress, thousands of jobs — wiped out overnight.

And it doesn’t stop there. Trump has slashed clean energy contracts, gutted programs expanding solar and wind power nationwide, and eliminated subsidies that were helping us transition faster to renewable energy.

Energy experts warn his agenda will leave us with higher prices and a weaker economy, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Clean energy is the cheapest and fastest way to power homes and businesses. It means good-paying jobs, lower energy bills, and healthier communities. Trump calls it the “scam of the century.” I call it the future we can’t afford to lose.

We may not be able to stop this administration from doing Big Oil’s bidding, but we can fight like hell to build a firewall of climate champions at every other level of government. Local councils, state legislatures, Congress, and beyond. Every seat matters in the fight to protect our communities and keep climate progress alive.
