Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

Leo Varadkar’s hollow words on abortion in new autobiography

In his newly released autobiography Speaking My Mind, former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar devotes considerable space to the subject of abortion.

His remarks on the topic, for the most part, resemble a string of rehearsed talking points - inconsistent in logic and values, like someone scrambling to defend what he knows deep down is an indefensible stance to maintain.

One of the more revealing sections on the issue is where he addresses former Tánaiste Simon Coveney’s reservations about the 2018 referendum proposal and how he was subsequently won over.

Suggesting that Varadkar was guided more by political calculus than principle, he says, referring to Coveney: “His support [for the referendum] was crucial, not just because we now presented a united front, but also because he spoke to and for the more socially conservative elements of the party and could reassure them.”

Dublin woman claims partner threatened to ‘drag her to abortion clinic’

A judge has refused bail to a man whose partner claims he assaulted her and threatened to ‘drag her to abortion clinic’.

The man in his 20s pleaded not guilty at Tallaght District Court to charges of criminal damage and theft. The charges also relate to an alleged domestic incident last Friday.

His pregnant partner claims he tried to coerce her into having an abortion, leaving her in fear for herself and her unborn child. Gardai objected to bail on the grounds that they believed the man may not turn up in court for the next hearing. The woman told the court she’s “living in fear for me and my kids and my unborn child”. She alleges the accused threatened to drag her “by the hair” for the abortion.

Cases involving coercive abortion are increasingly prevalent. Regular readers of Vital Signs will know that we regularly report on new cases where women are pressured into having abortions against their will.

The government’s response has been marked by near silence on the issue, while Oireachtas members like Carol Nolan, Sharon Keogan and Sarah O’Reilly continue to press hard for action to be taken.

As we’ve pointed out before, politicians hiding behind the fear that admitting the truth might shake Ireland’s abortion law is no excuse. This failure to act is placing women and their babies in real danger. It is an issue that demands urgent attention and needs to be dealt with in the new Dáil term that has just started after the lengthy summer recess.

Lila Rose

Lila Rose scores decisive win in debate on abortion at Yale University

Reflecting the wider cultural move in the US toward a pro-life position, Live Action president Lila Rose won a decisive victory earlier this week in a heated abortion debate at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

In a surprising turn at the Ivy League university long considered a pro-abortion stronghold, attendees voted to reject abortion, delivering instead a show of support for the right to life of the unborn child. The Yale Political Union voted 60-31 against a pro-abortion resolution affirming “choice” over life.

In the debate, Rose faced Frances Kissling, former president of Catholics for Free Choice, a leading pro-abortion group. Rejecting the claim that abortion is synonymous with women’s empowerment, Rose argued that genuine freedom is rooted in compassion and responsibility rather than in violence.

Her victory at Yale signals a shift in the national discussion on the issue in the US, where the cause of protecting unborn babies is beginning to put a serious dent in the pro-abortion narrative that has shaped discussion for half a century.
