We're suing sheriffs who unlawfully work with ICE.
Friend –
We just filed a lawsuit against Wisconsin county sheriffs' departments for unlawfully holding immigrants in detention at the behest of ICE.

In Wisconsin and across the country, the federal government's mass detention and deportation campaign is expanding with breakneck speed. Here in Wisconsin, we've seen a dramatic increase in the number of county sheriffs willing to assist ICE in arresting, jailing, and removing immigrants under the Trump regime.
Accordingly, many of those sheriffs are honoring ICE's requests to hold individuals in custody beyond their scheduled dates so they can be picked up and sent to a detention facility.
These requests – known as administrative immigration detainers – are not signed off by a judge and lack legal authority under state law, yet Wisconsin sheriffs are granting them by the thousands. As of March 2025, the vast majority of Wisconsin county sheriffs are honoring ICE detainers.
We believe county sheriffs are legally prohibited from holding individuals on detainers for ICE, so we're suing to challenge and ultimately ban the practice. <[link removed]>
In recent weeks, we've brought to light that ICE has been renting detention space from multiple county sheriffs. We issued a report documenting the extent to which state and local authorities are partnering with the federal government and taking part in its cruel mass deportation regime. The ACLU of Wisconsin will continue to use every tool at our disposal to fight back and ensure immigrants across the state don't have to live in constant fear of being ripped away from their families, friends and communities.
Now as much as ever, we must take action to care for our communities. You can follow along with updates about this case and get involved in building a world we all want to live in. <[link removed]>
