I wanted to write you a personal note about an alarming attack on free speech.
The FCC, which is controlled by Trump’s appointees, pressured ABC affiliates to remove Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the air. ABC caved to the Trump Administration and suspended his show entirely.
This should raise alarm bells for everyone in this country.
Meanwhile Trump is restricting major news organizations’ access to press briefings and has replaced their dedicated offices in the Pentagon with those for the likes of The Daily Caller and Breitbart.
When those in power seek to silence any voices that disagree with them, it is a threat to the First Amendment freedoms we in New Hampshire and people across America hold dear. We have not seen this level of censorship since the McCarthy era.
This is not how our democracy should work.
I took an oath to uphold the Constitution — and that includes defending the First Amendment, which protects our rights to free speech and protest. Donald Trump and his allies cannot be allowed to bulldoze our freedoms and bully Americans into silence.
We need to act now to make sure he can’t. That means flipping the Senate, defending our rights and freedoms, and ensuring that our democracy — which only survives while we have free and vigorous debate — can live on.
