The Campaign to Undermine the Midterms

The Constitution gives states and Congress the power to run elections, and the president has virtually no role in the process. Yet President Trump ignored this fact and issued an executive order in March that aims to overhaul the nation’s election systems. His administration is dismantling a federal agency responsible for protecting election security. And it has targeted election officials and others who keep elections free and fair, while supporting those who undermine elections, including the January 6 rioters.

The Brennan Center is connecting the dots between these unprecedented, and in some cases illegal, moves: They are part of a push to undermine American elections, one that will likely gather momentum as the 2026 midterms approach. Join us for a live virtual event with Brennan Center experts. They will discuss the Trump administration’s coordinated strategy to meddle with the next election and ways to protect the integrity of the vote.

Democracy’s Day in Court

The Supreme Court has steadily chipped away at protections designed to make American democracy fairer, more inclusive, and more representative. The Court has gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, shut federal courthouse doors to challenges to partisan gerrymandering, opened the floodgates to big money in politics, and allowed the president to ignore checks and balances.

In the current term, the justices will hear of cases that could accelerate this troublesome trend and produce landmark decisions. One case implicates how the Voting Rights Act ensures fair representation in state legislatures. Another challenges a campaign finance law that protects against political corruption. And another takes up the president’s asserted power to unilaterally impose tariffs.

Join us for a virtual discussion with legal experts and longtime Court watchers. They’ll break down some of the major cases on the docket and explain what the outcomes could mean for the future of American democracy.
