Jewish Students Around the World. More than three quarters of Jewish students worldwide
[link removed]
hide their religious identity (78%) and Zionist identity (81%) on campus, while one in five know Jewish peers who were physically assaulted on campus this past year. As the new academic year begins, a
[link removed]
global survey by ADL and the World Union of Jewish Students reveals alarming results from students in over 60 countries on 6 continents. As Victoria, a Jewish Studies student at the University of Vienna, shared in the report: “For a moment, I felt like it was the 1930s, and Jewish students were being chased from their universities."

DEEPER: In an op-ed titled “

Jewish Students Shouldn’t Have to Hide Their Identity, ” ADL SVP Marina Rosenberg shares her insights from work with Jewish communities around the world. As she says about this moment for students: "It’s an exhausting daily choice between authenticity and safety."

Heard on the Hill. Yesterday in DC,
[link removed]
ADL volunteers met with over 20 House and Senate offices (both Republicans and Democrats) to push for action on antisemitism concerns. Among the topics championed by the ADL advocates were the HEAL Act, which would order an audit of national Holocaust education programs; “robust funding” for the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, which faces potential budget cuts; and letters from lawmakers to K-12 schools in their districts, calling on the schools to implement clear policies on antisemitic harassment. Additionally, in the Senate meetings, ADL pushed for the Protecting Students on Campus Act, which helps with discrimination complaints by students. As ADL's
Lauren Wolman explained, “From first-time volunteers to seasoned ADL leaders, our message is the same: protecting Jewish students is not partisan, it’s a matter of basic safety and civil rights.”

Antisemitism in Social Work. A
[link removed]
new report published by the Jewish Social Work Consortium documents
[link removed]
pervasive systemic antisemitism in social work. The report documents the silencing, erasure and systemic exclusion of Jewish social workers and students since 10/7. On campus, anti-Zionist materials have become part of some university coursework in the field. The report's authors note that: “The silence and negligence of NASW [National Association of Social Workers] has been especially egregious.” Testimonies in the report reveal exclusion from frameworks and institutional failures that put Jewish social workers (and future social workers) at risk.

Federal Funding Boost. The U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities

awarded a $10.4 million grant to the
[link removed]
Tikvah Fund, a Jewish nonprofit, to combat antisemitism by creating curricula for middle and high school students, expanding fellowships for Jewish college students, offering public programs on antisemitism and resilience, and funding fellowships for journalists reporting on Judaism and antisemitism. This is a nice chunk of change, and is the largest grant ever in NEH history. In announcing it, the NEH emphasized accountability: “The agency will hold [schools] accountable for tolerating discrimination or harassment against Jewish students in violation of civil rights law.”

Italy. Two Italian professors faced
[link removed]
classroom disruptions and in one case brutal violence from pro-Palestinian protesters during lectures. At the University of Pisa, Prof. Rino Casella, who opposed cutting ties with Israeli universities, was beaten while trying to shield a student from attackers waving Palestinian flags and had to be taken to the hospital for head and arm injuries. Casella called the classroom “a sacred place, a place of dialogue — not a place of violence.” At the Polytechnic University of Turin, Israeli lecturer Pini Zorea defended the IDF during a protest-interrupted lecture. The result may (or may not) surprise you. The school cut ties with the professor, calling it unacceptable. See the
lead article in this edition for more about the alarming levels of hate on European campuses.

California K-12 Schools. After a lengthy political back-and-forth, AB-715 was passed by the California Senate and Assembly as an impactful foundational step toward addressing systemic antisemitism in K-12 classrooms. The ADL-championed bill makes California the first state to create a statewide antisemitism prevention coordinator for public schools housed in the Office of Civil Rights under the administration of the Government Operations Agency — providing stronger anti-discrimination protections for students.
[link removed]
ADL played a key role in ensuring that the bill addressed needed changes in schools and is now calling on Gov. Newsom to sign it. CA Sen. Scott Wiener, who co-chairs the Legislative Jewish Caucus,
[link removed]
expressed his frustration with the prolonged resistance, saying that “I have increasingly come to the conclusion that if we had introduced a bill with three words — antisemitism is bad — a bunch of these people would still oppose the bill.” ADL's
[link removed]
Robert Trestan added that this final version of the bill, after extensive negotiations by the legislators, is important. “There are sufficient effective provisions of the bill that will make a difference for Jewish students in California, and if we didn’t think it’s going to be effective, we wouldn’t support it.”

Mapping Antisemitism. Speaking of the need to fight hate in California schools... A Jewish newspaper has created an

interactive map documenting antisemitic incidents in Bay Area K–12 schools since 10/7. The map highlights nearly 20 reported incidents, including vandalism, harassment and disruptions targeting Jewish students. This initiative provides a visual representation of the uptick in antisemitism within local schools, offering a valuable resource for parents, educators and policymakers to address and prevent such occurrences.

A ‘Come to Judaism’ Moment at a Jesuit School. Yaron Ayalon has been named director of
[link removed]
Fairfield University’s Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and professor of religious studies, bringing his expertise to what some might see as an unexpected home... a Jesuit university. The Sephardic Judaism scholar sees the Connecticut school as a safe, local alternative for Jewish students facing rising antisemitism at elite colleges, emphasizing the opportunity for something new: “I’m a builder. I build new programs and new things, and that’s really why I’m here.” Ayalon plans to grow a Jewish student community on campus and expand programming that engages both Jewish and non-Jewish students, fostering meaningful education and inclusive community.

Kickoff! The return of college football has
[link removed]
created a unique opportunity to combat campus antisemitism by leveraging the influence of student athletes. Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) piloted a campaign at Syracuse University, where administrators had taken a strong stance against antisemitic incidents following the 10/7 attacks. To amplify this leadership, the group enlisted football player Dan Villari and basketball player Chris Bell to promote a thank-you campaign using their social media platforms under the NCAA’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy. Their posts, combined with digital ads and creative memes, generated over 844,000 views, reinforced the positive administration action and led to a major boost in student
engagement. The campaign highlights a new and effective way to enlist college athletes in the fight against antisemitism.

DEEPER: For more athletes who are outspoken champions against hate, watch this ADL ‘Game Changers’ special event called “

Safe at Home, ” held in partnership with Maccabi USA. In a lively discussion, former MLB All-Star Kevin Youkilis and rising college star Morgan Zietz shared their personal stories of Jewish pride and resilience on and off the field.
