We are not collateral damage
Dear Supporter,
At Fawcett, we’ve spent years campaigning for women to be properly represented in government. But representation is not just about numbers. It’s about being heard, respected, and taken seriously when we are there.
The last few weeks have been exhausting. The headlines keep coming, but the story stays the same. Women and girls are being used as political tools. Our safety is debated. Our dignity is pushed aside.
There’s the debate around Peter Mandelson. Many powerful people knew he was closely associated with a sexual predator. And still, he was chosen. Then came the resignation of a senior government adviser, years after his explicit and racist “jokes” about Diane Abbott were widely known.
The pattern is clear. Those in power only speak up when it’s politically convenient. Women pay the price for their silence.
We won’t let this go unchallenged.
The weekend’s protest, led by Tommy Robinson, was billed as a moment of unity. Of course, it was nothing of the sort. It was unsafe for women, and openly hostile and dangerous for women of colour.
We heard chants about “our women and girls”, men falling over themselves to shout about women’s safety, while using it to peddle racism and division. Where are those same voices when women’s refuges close? Let’s see 110,000 of them take to the streets for that.
We are fed up. And tired. And we bet you are too.
At Fawcett, we don't only fight for women to be represented, we demand they be respected. That our safety and dignity is prioritised consistently, not just when it's politically useful.
