John --
Our coalition's organizing efforts in Iowa made the front page of the Des Moines Register last weekend!
Just like what happened in South Dakota, Iowa landowners and communities impacted by proposed CO2 pipelines have spent the past years organizing at the county and state level, and eminent domain and CO2 pipelines are now cited as the "top election issue" for candidates running for Governor and the State Legislature. [1]
On the federal front, last week Congressmen Sean Casten (D-IL) and Jared Huffman (D-CA) sent a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin, urging EPA to stop approvals and operations for carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities until ongoing systemic problems have been addressed. [2]

"Recent events regarding CCS, including substantial well failures at the Archer Daniels Midland injection well facility in Decatur, Illinois, and a pattern of well failures and non-compliance at injection wells in Texas, demonstrate regulatory gaps that threaten underground sources of drinking water and warrant immediate EPA action," the letter reads.
The letter urges EPA to direct existing injection well operators to cease injections, and halt approval of Class II and Class VI carbon injection wells, as well as approval of any further state primacy applications -- until EPA is able to ensure that CO2 is not leaking from wells, updates regulations, and
ensures adequate staffing.

In case you missed it -- Bold hosted an online screening of our new CO2 pipeline documentary, "Under Pressure," with a Q&A featuring participants from the film including a first responder during the 2020 Satartia, MS carbon pipeline ruptures, and landowners fighting eminent domain and the proposed Summit carbon pipeline in Iowa. Last month at the Netroots Nation conference in New Orleans, Justin J. Pearson, the National Director of Bold's Movement Leaders project, gave a keynote speech about keeping hope alive in the face of challenges. View the recording.
